The results of this study indicate that operational strategies have the potential to significantly reduce the public health impact of emissions from transit fleets. Intake of PM_(2.5) was 73% greater in the scenario that did not include public health impacts as an objective in the vehicle scheduling problem Unlike previous studies1'2, this study considered exposure at the intra-regional scale. This provides a more accurate assessment of the impacts of transit fleet emissions and more importantly allows the optimization to exploit heterogeneity in the exposure potential along bus routes as well as vehicle emission rates. Through a partnership with TransLink and GIRO Inc., it was possible to develop a real-world case study that increases the usefulness of these results to transit agencies.
