Font Improvements in Cockpit Displays and their Relevance to Automobile Safety

The legibility of text is influenced by physical factors, such as size and luminance contrast, and by design factors, such as the shapes of letter forms, including case, x-height, and form differentiation. We review psychophysical findings concerning legibility of type sizes and forms used on digital displays, and suggest areas for further investigation. Examination of an unpublished study conducted by the aviation industry reveals a correlation of reading speed and intrinsic form factors suggesting benefits for automotive safety.
