In this paper, a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) based model is proposed for optimal allocation of thyristor controlled phase angle regulator (TCPAR). The optimization is conducted to minimize overall system cost (i.e. operating cost and investment cost of TCPAR). The rating of TCPAR is first obtained based on N-1 contingency analysis. The impact of optimal placement of TCPAR has also been investigated by means of several security and reliability indices. The simulations are carried out on the Roy Billinton test system (RBTS) to show the effectiveness of adding TCPAR.
