Research on Strongly Consistent Guarantee for Replicated Databases

In a replicated database system, data consistency is the most important property that we should pay attention to. In practical applications, we expect that each transaction access the latest state of the database. So it is a puzzle to provide strong consistency in a replicated system. In addition, strong consistency must be provided at a cost which results in considerable performance. With a brief introduction to the development of strongly consistent guarantee for replicated databases, we firstly describe the definitions of strong consistency and session consistency. With analyzing the characteristics of strong consistency and session consistency, we compare their performance. After showing the principle of three techniques that provide strong consistency and how they work, we then compare their performance and analyze the advantages and disadvantages for each technique. At last, we discuss the challenges of providing strong consistency that we are currently facing with.
