This paper describes the application of an advanced control system which was implemented at Mreal’s Joutseno site. The objectives were to reduce pulp quality variability and, most importantly, reduce operating costs by minimizing the specific energy consumption. The control system includes several software sensors, two model predictive controllers, and utilizes a new pulp quality on-line analyzer. The control system has an optimization layer, a tool that enables the process to run at a cost effective operating point while simultaneously achieving the quality targets. Results of the project were very positive and all objectives in terms of quality and costs were exceeded.
