Green space as a tool can manage urban stormwater runoff in Kunming City?

Despite continuous investment and various efforts, solving water problems such as, water scarcity, flood disaster and nonpoint source pollution are still serious in Kunming City. However, through reconstructing the green space and increasing it's regulation capacity for stormwater is an important approach for decreasing these water problems. This paper analyzes the stormwater storage and detention function of green space along a main Kunming City road use field surveys and calculationsy. The results shows that, theoretically, the road green space can store and detain about 732mm/a of precipitation according to the storage and detention potential, which account for about 72.1% of mean annual rainfall. However, most of the road green spaces are higher than the road surface, failing to effectively store and detain the stormwater runoff. By changing the idea of urban landscape architecture, the green space will be a useful tool for stormwater runoff management in Kunming City.
