In this study, flash experiments were conducted in a continuous-flow unitto obtain experimental data on vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) using a heavy gas oilfeedstock. The VLE data were then used to estimate the interaction coefficientsbetween hydrogen and hydrocarbon pseudo-components that are needed for flashcalculation, which predicts the flow rates of the vapor and liquid phases as well astheir physical properties. This information was used to predict fluid flow regimes ina trickle-bed pilot plant hydrotreater and to generate maps of operating conditionsand reactor configurations that meet plug flow and complete catalyst wettingcriteria.
