Using the electrochemical noise controlled submerged impinging jet the critical wall shear stresses were investigated for CuNi 90/10 (UNS C70600) and CuNi 70/30 (UNS C 71500) at room temperature in untreated and chlorinated artificial and natural seawater. The alloy composition, the surface condition (ground, pre-scaled) and the presence of hypochlorite significantly influence the materials resistance to flow induced localized corrosion (FILC). The performance of CuNi alloys in clean artificial seawater was found to be similar to the behaviour in clean natural seawater. The resistance of CuNi alloys to FILC was found to be significantly higher than previously reported in the literature.
