Non-yellowing foam using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) has been successfully developed, by overcoming a well-known disadvantage of HDI, i.e. similar reactivity of two isocyanate groups, for flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) production. HDI has advantages such as high reactivity compared to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). We developed a new non-yellowing FPUF using an HDI-based special prepolymer, which has excellent light stability as shown in Figure 1. In this study, our investigation clarified following. 1. A newly developed HDI-based special prepolymer has higher reactivity compared with monomeric HDI. 2. Special blended catalysts give the prepolymer a suitable activity for the foam production. 3. Combination of special additives suppresses a foam discoloration caused by a metal-based catalyst.
