A Study on Mitigation of Impact of Climate Change through selected Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency projects

At the global level, energy sector in general, and industries in particular, are the main contributors of anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), most notably carbon dioxide (CO_2). Within developing countries, energy efficiency measures in industries have emerged as a cost-effective option for mitigating climate change. With spiraling increase of energy prices, increased competitiveness through globalization, and growing concerns about environmental risks, the Indian corporate sector is also becoming increasingly inclined towards promoting energy efficiency in the industry sector. In addition, the Government of India's Energy Conservation Act 2001 has provided a policy impetus for the energy intensive industries to promote energy savings, through various efficiency improvement measures. The overall implementation framework is being led by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, wherein, among other actions, mandatory energy audits are being carried out in major, energy-intensive industries and other designated consumers. The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) has also participated in the program led by BEE and has conducted more than 100 energy audits /studies in various industrial facilities in India. Alongside the regulatory framework, the BEE has carried out an award scheme for the energy efficiency performance amongst industries. This paper draws upon some of the selected case industrial energy efficiency studies, and analyzes the data, energy savings and corresponding CO_2 emission reduction. The paper examines the trend and replication potential in these industry sectors, and options to accelerate the initiatives, which could provide the scope to replicate and maximize the benefits across various industry sectors.
