CASE STUDY: ENERGY AUDIT ON 45 MW COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANT IN IZMIR, TURKEY, MARCH - JUNE 2009

An energy audit was conducted on a 45 MW, combined cycle, power plant in Izmir, Turkey, in the first half of 2009. The result of study was a set of recommendations to implement 8 specific measures that would save more money than they cost in their life cycle. These energy conservation measures were HRSG cleaning, insulation, steam traps, cooling tower pump VFDs, feedwater pump VFDs, compressed air leaks, air compressor VFD, waste heat recovery, lighting in water treatment building, and lighting in control building. The HRSG Cleaning measure in this project saves more than all the others combined. It was conservatively estimated that finned tubes of HRSGs cleaning would restore at least 1% of the power plant's efficiency, lost from fouling. The remaining recommendations were a collection of smaller ECMs, which together could make significant savings. The largest potential savings with the plant's internal load came from installing variable frequency drives (VFDs) on the plant's big water pumps. By investing 422,000 USD, the power plant can reduce its energy costs by over 280,000 USD/year (0.8% decrease) and its carbon footprint by 1,600 tons/year (1% decrease). The whole project's internal rate of return (IRR) is 66% and the net present value is 1.7 million USD.
