A method for reducing the computational domain size in finite-difference time-domain analyses of structures with azimuthal periodicity is presented. Examples of such structures include two dimensional photonic crystals and microdisks with a periodic patterning. A form of Bloch's theorem appropriate to periodicity in the azimuthal direction is derived and used to formulate boundary conditions used in the calculation. The method is applied to the modal analysis of a photonic crystal fiber.
