The transmission properties of guided waves in photonic crystal waveguides containing barriers formed from Kerr nonlinear media are studied theoretically using a difference equations approach. The photonic crystal is a square lattice array of linear media dielectric cylinders, the waveguide is formed in the photonic crystal by cylinder replacement along the x-axis of the photonic crystal with linear media replacement cylinders, and the barrier is formed by replacing a finite number of waveguide cylinders with cylinders containing Kerr nonlinear optical media. The transmission properties of guided modes through the barrier are studied for barriers and barriers connected to an off-channel single site impurity. The effects of the dispersion of the waveguide modes are shown.
