BUIDINGS THAT HEAT AND COOL THEMSELVES: PASSIVE DOUBLE PLAY IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF OPERATION

Buildings can produce most of the thermal energy they need using passive design, thermal mass, and applications of the roof pond concept. The Double Play buildings at Zomeworks use overhead water storage as the working fluid for heat transfer and thermal mass. They are based on the Skytherm buildings designed by Harold Hay that use a roof pond to heat the building in winter and cool it in summer.The Double Play buildings known as the Dave Houses have operated for two years, and have been monitored during much of this operation. This period has proven the feasibility of both the overhead radiant system and the completely passive operation. Temperature data are shown.Insights have been gained regarding the possibility for design improvements. Rooftop radiator configurations are discussed, and recommendations are made for climates that are well suited for Double Play heating and cooling. Future plans and applications are outlined.
