Optimized well placement and design applied in Sisi-Nubi field development illustrates the important benefits that can be achieved in maximizing field production with optimum well numbers to be drilled. The paper will go through the lessons learned and challenges encountered in the process.Sisi-Nubi is a gas field operated by Total E&P Indonesie in partnership with Pertamina and Inpex and situated 25 km offshore of modern Mahakam Delta with water depth of 60-90m. The reservoirs in Sisi-Nubi are multi-layer Upper Miocene deltaic deposits, spread out in almost 2000m (1900-3 800mSS) vertical interval with two distinctive characters: poorly consolidated sands in the upper part and relatively poor to tight sands in the deeper levels.Field development phase-1 includes the installation of three wellhead platforms, sub-sea pipelines, production separation facility as well as drilling of 27 development wells. As per January 2010,23 wells have been drilled and 19 of them are in production. The sub-surface contribution to the optimization of well placement and design includes:• Utilization of seismic data and geomodel in designing complex 3D well trajectories to optimize multi-layer reservoir penetration as well as in minimizing the drilling hazards, mainly shallow gas and loss-prone carbonate layers• Utilization of sub-surface knowledge in optimizing the application of completion and sand control techniques.
