The chemical inhibition of petroleum refinery high temperature sulphidic corrosion has been practiced successfully since several years. The specific type of inhibitor used, the application technology, corrosion monitoring, unit metallurgy, operational conditions and the quality of the processed crude oil all play an important role. This paper discusses the impact of specific crude contaminants and different high temperature sulphidic corrosion inhibitors on sulphidic corrosion in laboratory autoclaves. It also discusses new refinery applications in the high temperature, high shear conditions of a crude distillation unit furnace and the monitoring of the inhibitor performance with FSM technology.
