Experimental Researches of Gypsum Wallboard's Contribution to Lateral Resistance Capacity of Wood Shear Wall

Wood shear walls are the main vertical structures of light-frame wood construction to resist horizontal loads caused by winds and earthquake. In most cases, gypsum wallboards are commonly used in partition walls or on the interior of the load bearing sheaar walls. The contribution of gypsum wallboard to lateral resistance capacity is not taken into consideration in Chinese code for design of timber structures (GB 50005—2003). Actually, gypsum wallboard could partly influence the lateral strength and stiffness of wood shear wall. A total of six walls with various sheathing materials were tested under monotonic loading. Two walls were sheathed with only one panel of gypsum, two walls were sheathed with only one panel of OSB and others were sheathed with OSB on the exterior and gypsum wallboard on the interior. The resutlt indicateed that the contributions of gypsum to ultimate load,elasitc stiffness and energy dissipated when used in combination with OSB were 5.332 kN, 227.92kN/m and 180.8kN-mm, respectively. Compared with results of walls only sheathed with gypsum wallboard which including the contirbution of frame, these contibution did not increase linearly. The failure displacement was not influenced greatly, almost the same as the wall only sheathed with OSB.
