Mortise and tenon is the most common type of connection for jointing the beam and column member in timber frame structures. A mortise and tenon joint consists of a tongue that slots into a mortise cut in the mating piece of timber which can be strengthened with wood dowel or commonly known as pegged as reinforcement. Mortise and tenon is well known as one of the traditional method of timber construction and have been employed successfully over the period of time, however present design code of practice for timber; neither BS 5268 [1] nor MS 544 [2] does not include the design for mortise and tenon.
