Every earthquake presents opportunities for learning about ways of reducing or avoiding the destructive effects of this natural phenomenon and the Wenchuan Earthquake of May 12, 2008 in the Sichuan Province of China is no exception. In response to a proposal by the Forintek Division of FPInnovations, Forest Innovation Investment of the province of British Columbia (FII) supported a site visit to locations of wood structures to investigate how they have performed in the Wenchuan earthquake. Since the North American style of wood-frame construction is relatively new to China, it was of interest to observe the behaviour of this type of construction and, where available, to compare the performance of non-wood buildings with similar sizes and functions.
