The Birmingham Water Works Board is an independent entity in operation since 1951.The Water Works Board services approximately 600,000 customers located in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, St. Clair, and Walker Counties, and dates back to 1873, growing in size and technology throughout the years to attract industries into the area. The system obtains water from four (4) sources and transmits through nearly 4,000 miles of pipe.In the spring of 2009, the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) initiated a project to furnish leak detection of over 4,000 If of a portion of the 36-inch Water Main located within the Main Service Area. The purpose of the survey was to identify any locations where the main may be leaking.
