The growing demand for high-quality shipbuilding plates prompted Dongkuk Steel in Pohang, South Korea, to look for possibilities for boosting production and improving quality. The customized modernization concept developed by SMS Siemag comprised the mechanical, electrical and automation systems of the rolling mill. In addition to CVC? plus equipment for profile and flatness control, the finishing stand of Dongkuk Steel's two-stand rolling mill was equipped with a more powerful hydraulic roll-gap adjusting system, and the entire rolling line received a new automation system.On the X-Pact? Electrical and Automation Systems side, our scope of supply comprised new process models (Level 2) for pass schedule calculation, profile and flatness control (PFC) and material tracking, as well as the technological control systems (TCS). The material parameters required for pass schedule calculation and the profile and flatness model were also provided by SMS Siemag. They were taken from a database specially developed by SMS Siemag. Furthermore, we installed new technological control systems for the roughing stand and the finisher. The entire automation system was set up in our test facilities beforehand and tested according to the Plug & Work concept. Plug & Work simulates the production sequence and allows the automation functions to be tested and optimized under realistic conditions prior to installation in the works.The revamping job was successfully completed in November 2008. Comprehensive integration tests were run in preparation for automation system startup so that Dongkuk Steel attained its previous production level already in the first month after the revamp. In addition, the envisaged tight profile and flatness values were achieved. Thanks to the installation of CVC? plus, it was moreover possible for Dongkuk Steel to reduce the minimum plate thickness to 5 mm.
