1. FeO type laminations can be formed in the early finish mill stands of a HSM. A discontinuous friction factor in the roll bite due to errant scale flakes is the presumed mechanism in this specific case.2. A "plate tectonics" morphology of a surface condition is indicative of a rolled-in brittle material which fractures on entry to the roll bite.3. Overcooling of the strip surface early in the finish mill can cause loose scale flakes to form. If rolled into the strip surface, a poor surface appearance and FeO laminations may result.
