Description of a Simulation Method for Evaluating the Thermal Properties of Insulation Materials Used on an Evaporative Skid Cooling System in Reheat Furnaces
In order to save on annual natural gas usage at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco reheat furnaces, a lightweight refractory insulation with microtherm insulation liner was evaluated for use on the evaporative skid pipe cooling system. The insulation was successfully evaluated in a laboratory tunnel furnace simulating the conditions of a reheat furnace and evaporative skid cooling system. By comparing the thermal conductivities of the various insulation materials, it was possible to rank the materials in order of potential energy savings.
