Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has conducted a number of successful trials at its AtikokanGenerating Station in support of the objective of converting this single 227 MWe lignite unit tofire 100% woody biomass. A fuel handling incident at Atikokan provided clear evidence thatcoal handling systems cannot be used without appropriate modifications. Conceptualengineering has also been completed to define the significant investment required to safelyreceive and handle large volumes of pelletized wood biomass. Field test results havehighlighted two areas for additional consideration – the modification of the existing MPS coalpulverizers to handle pure wood pellets; and a solution to make use of the energy available inthe primary air system that is no longer required for the drying of the wood fuel. This paperwill discuss the pertinent test results to date and the solutions envisaged to address a full scaleretrofit of the milling systems to handle 100% wood pellet firing.
