As NeSSI? Generation 1 systems (standard mechanical substrate) continue to gain traction in the beginnings of an early majority market, NeSSI? Generation 2 systems (open standard digital communication bus) continue to struggle through the chasm between the early adopter and early majority stages of the technology adoption life cycle1. Generation 1 designs have enabled standard, compact, reliable systems that can significantly reduce the total cost of ownership versus that of conventional systems. However, the absence of remote communication coupled with the compact nature of these designs significantly limit technicians' visibility of the system relative to the flow paths and where to begin when troubleshooting is required. Generation 2 systems not only address these limitations, but also provide the means for realizing all tenets of the overall NeSSI? value proposition. Generation 2 technology-quite arguably a revolutionary innovation-is now a market ready reality including the highly important aspect of open standard digital bus communication; more specifically, intrinsically-safe Control Area Network (IS CAN).This paper briefly reviews the marketing challenges associated with revolutionary innovations and more specifically, crossing the chasm between the early adopter and early majority stages of the technology adoption life cycle. Details of a fully integrated IS CAN process analytical SHS design are discussed along with the solutions it provides to the ongoing challenges faced by the process analytical market. Finally, two actual integrated IS CAN process analytical system field implementations are illustrated and discussed.
