The carbon sequestration capacity in crop production system in North China Plain

Crop production systems play a vital role in the global carbon cycle. In order to get a clear understanding the carbon sequestration capacity in crop production system, this paper, based on the agricultural statistical data, adopted computational model of carbon fixation, evaluated the ability of carbon sequestration in crop production system in Wuqiao County of Hebei Province in North China Plain during the last 30 years. The conclusions are summarized as follows: The carbon fixation increases by 370.19 Gg, with average annual growth of 14.81 Gg·a−1, and the carbon density respectively increases by 9.64 Mg·hm−2, with average annual growth of 0.39 Mg ha−1 a−1. The ability of carbon fixation has been increasing, with the ability of carbon sink. The contribution rate of soil is about 55% in improving the carbon sequestration of crop system, while crop is about 45%, of which the proportion is increasing. Straw accounts for about 1/2 in carbon fixation of crops, economic yield accounts for about 1/3, and root accounts for about 1/6. Preliminary results show that improving the efficiency of straw and stabilizing the carbon in soil is an important way of enhancing ability of carbon sequestration in crop production system in North China Plain, which can provide powerful support for achieving low-carbon agriculture and addressing climate change.
