The increasing improvement of fabrication technology for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and the incorporation of increasing functionally in the elements within the circuits, provide a path to the precise control of phase and amplitude needed for a range of signal processing functions. In particular, it's envisioned that PICs will enhance photonic analog RF filtering capabilities for many applications. What's more, with PIC technology advancing toward higher circuit complexity and density, and increasing power efficiency, PICs may enable integrated RF photonic processing applications previously not possible.
