By means of a cyclic loading in a uniaxial compression with the MTS 816Rock Test System, the fatigue strength and fragmentation of sandstone wasmeasured for a various loading frequencies and amplitude. It was found thatfragmentation of the rock increased at low loading frequency than that at highloading frequency. Micro-observations for fractured rock specimens indicated that,in thin section prepared of a specimen subjected to a cyclic loading, there were clearcrack branching or bifurcation, and the lower the loading frequency were, the morebranching cracks were developed. Finally, some applications of this investigation inengineering practice were discussed.
