Bio-degradation of lignite is a potential technology of converting solid lignite coal to liquid fuel or high value-added chemicals at ambient conditions. This research studied bio-degradation of lignite model compounds to investigate the mechanisms of lignite bio-degradation. Lignite model compounds of ethyl benzoate and thymol were determined by organic solvent extraction of lignite samples. Bio-degradation results showed that ethyl benzonate can be degraded by Trichoderma sp. AH, C. versicolor and C. velutipes with high degradation percentages of 92.4%, 61.9% and 82.6%, respectively. Another lignite model compound of thymol was also easily degraded by C. velutipes and Bacteria Bl with both degradation percentages higher than 96%.
