A field experiment was carried out to investigate the indoorair flow pattern as well as to evaluate thermal comfort resultedfrom various window systems, in particular three types ofhorizontal pivot windows, for naturally ventilated houses in thehot and humid climate. The results show the horizontal pivotwindows brought 1.7-2.6 times higher wind speeds to theoccupied space (FL+1,100) than to the space near the floorsurface (FL+300) at the middle of room. Moreover, in case of thehorizontal pivot window with long window pane (Case 3),relatively strong wind reached the occupied space of leeward side.For the aspect ratio, the wide horizontal window (Case 4)obtained 0.07-0.47 m/s higher wind speed at the occupied spacethan the square horizontal window (Case 2) even when outdoorwind speed in Case 4 was lower. Further analysis on indoorthermal comfort shows that the horizontal pivot window withlong window pane (Case 3) reduced the average diurnal SET* by0.67°C in the occupied space of the center of room, comparedwith the simple opening. The average heat transfer coefficientwas reduced by 1.52 W/m~2K as well. The horizontal pivotwindow can improve the thermal comfort, i.e. lowering the SET*at the occupied space and the heat transfer coefficient on the floor,in naturally ventilated houses of the tropics and the long windowpane and the wide horizontal pivot window may contribute toimproving indoor thermal comfort.
