Whatever type of vessel is being designed, teams of specialist engineers and designers need to work together concurrently. Each of these teams typically uses specialist design tools appropriate for their own work but, as they do this, they need to reference data created and 'owned' by other teams using other tools. All too often, this referenced data is simply not accessible or useable from within the engineer's authoring tool. If the size of this problem can be reduced, there is a considerable opportunity to improve efficiency and working processes, reduce schedule times and improve quality. This paper will explain how the creation of a connected database of schematic, engineering and 3D objects and their attributes, together with specialised authoring tools that can exploit the full range of data available to them, can deliver significant benefits.
