Concurrent engineering in distributed development environments like those in the discrete manufacturing industries (such as automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, machinery) set enormous demands on the organization of collaboration between the involved companies and departments due its strong constraints (high complexity, short time-to-market, high quality requirements). Seamless data communication in all phases of the product development process is a prerequisite for cost-optimal and successful collaboration processes that shall be generally expanded around the globe. Suppliers developing the key system components for a number of different original equipment manufacturers face the challenge of ensuring CAD data availability combined with a high level of reliability in the format required by their customers. If data translation is involved, ensuring to take the system configuration into account poses an additional challenging task. The main obstacle in this process chain is often the insufficient data quality.
