The Eastman Kodak Company (Kodak) owns one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the US at its Kodak Park location in Rochester, NY. Kodak Park has over 30 miles of industrial sewers and a 36 mgd wastewater treatment plant. Kodak upgraded its industrial sewer system to minimize the potential for releases of industrial wastewater to the surrounding soil and groundwater. There was a heavy use of trenchless technologies including cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), sliplining with HDPE, and the application of spray-applied and CIPP linings in manholes and other structures. This presentation will outline the processes that were used to successfully complete the industrial sewer's Release Prevention Program. There will be a summary of "lessons learned" during the 10-year duration of the US$21,100,000 Program.There were several phases to the Program. First, protocols were established for an intensive investigation and evaluation of the industrial sewer system. An ongoing Technology Assessment program identified potential new technologies and ensured that existing technologies remained viable options for the Program. Then the sewers and structures that were identified as carrying hazardous waste were put into two categories: facilities that would continue to carry hazardous waste into the known future and facilities that were candidates for the discontinuance of the discharge of hazardous waste. Two (2) capital upgrade phases were undertaken, each with a five (5) year duration. The Initial Release Prevention Program was completed in 2003. The Final Release Prevention Program was completed in 2007. Program close-out and certification was complete in mid-2008.
