DEMONSTRATION OF VIRTUAL PRESSURIZER ROOM WITH LINKED KNOWLEDGE AT COMANCHE PEAK NPP

This paper describes a project demonstrating the process for developing and the benefits of applying virtual modeling and knowledge elicitation technologies to support preparations for a piping weld overlay job. The work, which was on the refueling outage critical path, was performed in a nuclear power plant pressurizer room containing radiation. Virtual models of the room were created from laser scans, and used to elicit tacit knowledge from experts about the work to be performed. This expertise was captured on video recordings, linked to the models, and men available for viewing by clicking on labels placed on the models. The interactive models were presented on computers and projection screens providing viewers with a very realistic simulation of being in the pressurizer room. The pressurizer room models and linked knowledge were used to support job planning, and worker orientation, training, and pre-job briefs. The results demonstrate that virtual models may be (1) developed quickly and inexpensively from existing laser scans, (2) used to elicit valuable knowledge from experts, and (3) used to present the results to those who may benefit from knowledge availability. The models and linked knowledge were used successfully for worker job planning, orientation, training, and pre-job briefs. Estimated benefits of radiation avoidance attributable to use of the models were found to be greater than the estimated model and knowledge development costs.
