A Multi-Purpose Pavement Testing Device: Applications of the Rolling Dynamic Deflectometer and the Stationary Dynamic Deflectometer in Pavements

The Rolling Dynamic Deflectometer (RDD) capable of measuring continuous deflection profiles along pavements has been used in: (a) delineating problematic areas to be repaired, (b) identifying potential locations for reflective cracking, and (c) developing inputs for selecting a rehabilitation scheme. Unlike discrete testing methods, the RDD travels along a pavement and its continuous deflection profile provides 100% coverage along the pavement. On the other hand, the use of the RDD at a stationary mode, called as the Stationary Dynamic Deflectometer (SDD), is used for super-accelerated pavement testing (SAP). The SAP is defined as the application of one million load repetitions to a full-scale pavement system in one day and evaluates the fatigue performance of in-situ pavements. The SDD applications include: (a) evaluating rut resistance in a flexible pavement and fatigue-crack resistance in a rigid pavement and (b) estimating the remaining life of in-service pavements under heavy traffic loads. This paper introduces benefits of the RDD as a multi-purpose pavement testing device and presents three case studies using the RDD and SDD.
