Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are grown directly on nickel foils by catalytic decomposition of ethylene. The carbon layers are composed of a dense carbon layer and a entangled CNF layer. By changing the growth conditions, the wettability of CNF layers can be tuned. Oxidation pretreatment leads to a contact angle higher than 150°. The control of the roughness enhances the hydrophobicity, allowing us to create super-hydrophobic surfaces.
