This paper presents recent work conducted in the framework of the OECD Forum of Space Economics. It examines selected methods for assessing socio-economic contributions derived from using space technologies. One important lesson-learned is that existing methods provide useful hints at actual derived socio-economic benefits, but with diverse inherent caveats. There is a need to refine further quantifiable analytical tools. To counterbalance current methodological limitations and offer original approaches, parallels with terrestrial infrastructures and the economic importance of risk management are also presented.
