The application of passive flow control in the form of leaflet vortex generators has been found to significantly reduce procoagulant potential in a steady flow model of a jet emanating from the b-datum line during the closing of a bileaflet mechanical heart valve. Particle Image Velocimetry studies of the jet model indicate that decreased Reynolds shear stresses initiated by the vortex generators are likely responsible.
