The conditions to treat the soil contaminated by petroleum during exploitation in Liaohe Oilfield with adsorption by lignite were investigated. The best adsorption results were obtained under the following conditions. The granularity of lignite was less than 100 μm, quality rate of the lignite and the petroleum –contaminated soil was 2:5. The temperature of reaction was 70°C, the stirring intensity was 600 rpm with 60 minutes. The removal rate of petroleum from the soil was over 70%. The result indicated that it was feasible to some extent to treat the petroleum –contaminated soil with lignite.
