The phytotoxicity imposed by nickel (Ni) and antioxidant enzyme responses of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) have been investigated. The plants were subjected to 0-60 mM NiCl2 and analyzed for growth, chlorophyll, protein, Fe and Zn contents and antioxidative enzyme activities in the shoots and roots. Exposure to NiCl2 caused higher Ni accumulation in the roots, decreased shoot and root dry weight and chlorophyll, protein, Fe and Zn concentrations. Peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities increased considerably in the roots and shoots after exposure to the metal. The results indicate a Ni toxicity for radish plants at the supplemented concentrations which followed by some stimulated enzymatic antioxidative responses to reduce the oxidative damages resulted from nickel absorption and translocation.
