Distribution of Heavy Metals in River Sediments from the Anhui Section of the Huaihe River Basin

21 Sedimentary samples were taken from the Anhui section of the Huaihe river basin. The contents of 10 heavy metal elements (Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Mn, Ba, Tl, and Zn) were determined by ICP-MS. The contents of organic matter were also tested. The results show that the different degree enrichments of heavy metals in sediments are appearing as compared with the average values of heavy metal contents in soils in China. Moreover, organic matter concentrations are decreasing progressively from upper reaches to lower reaches in the major river. The distribution features of Be, Cr, Mn, Ba, and Zn in sediments are more clear in research area as compared with the others.
