Development of non-contact gaze detecting system and its applications to gaze duration measurement of on-board display
In recent years, on-board display device have increased with the evolution of vehicles. Especially, vehicles loaded with a navigation system have been multiplying rapidly. When a driver operates a vehicle, the driver detects and judges a situation of the road to drive while seeing the route-guided map on the display of the navigation system. Thus, from a safety point of view, improvement in visibility of the navigationsystem is very important. We have developed a non-contact gaze duration measurement system for on-board navigation system. The system can detect gaze direction and display gaze duration of the driver both in the darkness such as night and in the brightness such as direct sunlight. The resolution of the detection of gaze direction is about 3 degrees, and the accuracy of the gaze duration is about 3 flames (0.1 seconds). In addition, using the measurement system, we measured gaze duration of the navigation system display in following situations: 1) Comparison between only map display and additional voice route guidance, and 2) Comparison between the fixed direction mapdisplay and the heading-oriented direction map display. Results of the measurement are following: 1) The voice guidance reduces the gaze duration time by 50-70%, and 2) The "heading-up" map display reduces the gaze duration by 5-10%.This system is useful in measuring display gaze duration and the results of the measurement reflected on the development of on-board displays.
