This paper describes the research finding on the problem of estimation of the technical feasibility of "green electricity" production.The obtained results have been extracted from the Kozienice Power Plant of Poland and based on liquid biofuels co-firing with hard coal in 650 t/h steam boiler of 200 MWel utility unit. Based on the obtained tests results, the installation for storage, transport and co-firing of liquid biomass was designed and constructed, ensuring a high system reliability and renewable energy potential increase with the retrofitting of the existing heavy fuel oil guns. The pre-design study involving the lab-scale analyses (determination of basic parameters) and pilot combustion tests in two kinds of demo installations is described in details. Experiments were carried out with the use of palm oil, rape seed oil and glycerin. As experimental stands we used the drop tube furnace and 55kW oil firing boiler.Co-firing trials tests have been initiated owing to preliminary promising results concerning the glycerin combustion in the pilot scale.The glycerin combustion has resulted in the following effects: the decrease of hard coal consumption, renewable energy generation, and CO_2 emissions decrease. Due to the minimal ash content in glycerin, the amount of plant's solid waste has been observed to decrease. Currently, the installation is capable of co-firing of liquid biofuels other than glycerin. Such a commercial scale installation, operating since the beginning of 2009 and receiving the guarantees of origin for the proper amount of electricity generated in the process has been greatly innovative in Poland and in elsewhere.
