Being an energy-saving equipment with great development potential, high temperature heat pump is becoming one of the research hotspots in recent years. However, there is little research about the application of high temperature heat pump on ships as yet. In this paper some key technologies for the development and application of high temperature heat pump were introduced briefly. The amount of waste heat of marine diesel engine was analyzed, showing the advantages of high temperature heat pump to recover the waste heat from cylinder cooling water of marine diesel engines. The conditions for the high temperature heat pump to recover marine diesel engine waste heat were given. Moreover a novel high temperature heat pump system for the marine diesel engine waste heat recovery (WHR) was developed and its schematic diagram was provided. Finally two suitable high temperature working fluids for this system were recommended.
