An H2S Passive Sampler Using Silver or Zinc Saltsbased NonNitricAcid Collection Medium

A new collection medium for monitoring H2S in air by using AMEXa silver basedmaterial or zinc based nonnitricacid collection medium has been developed andcompared. Studies have found that collection of H2S on paper tapes impregnated withsilver nitrate and nitric acid was very useful for determination of H2S in air. But theevaporation of HNO3 in the paper tapes can cause problems for the passive sampler bodyand strongly affect the determination of other air pollutants in a multigas passivesampling system developed by authors. This new passive sampler with AMEX has beenextensively tested in the laboratory and validated in field studies. Comparingmeasurements obtained with the use of the new passive sampler with AMEX and H2Scontinuous analyzers yielded an accuracy of greater than 85%. The new H2S passivesampler can be used to measure ambient H2S concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 10 ppbbased on a onemonthexposure period. This system has been used in many airmonitoring projects. Laboratory and field study results are reported in this paper.
