Apeseed oil deodorizer distillate (RDOD) is a valuable byproduct in the refining of rapeseed oil. The production of biodiesel from RDOD with high FFA was investigated in this work. Due to its high FFA, the RDOD was processed in two steps: D002 cation exchange resin catalyzed esterification, followed by base catalyzed methanolysis. The results showed that D002 cation exchange resin presented high esterification activity to transfer the FFA to fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), and the maximum FFA conversion rate reached 97.7% in 4 h. The methanolysis process converted the triglycerides into FAMEs and glycerol, the maximum triglyceride conversion rate was 97.4% in 1.5 h. The quality properties of RDOD biodiesel, obtained by the two step processes, were analyzed. It is indicated that RDOD might be a cheap and valuable renewable raw material for biodiesel production, and the two-step process was an alternative feasibility method to produce biodiesel from RDOD.
