FABRICATION OF NYLON NANOCOMPOSITE FIBERS FOR ANTIMICROBIAL TEXTILE APPLICATIONS

The Nylon-6 filaments were infused with Silver coated,CNTs to enhance themechanical,thermal and antimicrobial properties of the textile fibers.The silvernanoparticles were coated on CNTs using a sonochemical method.The nylon-6 and1%wt silver coated CNTs was dry mixed and melt extruded using a single screwextruder.The structure and properties of nylon-6 fibers and silver coated CNTshave been characterized using X-ray diffraction,transmission electron microscopyand TEM.The ultimate tensile strength was found to be 414.27 MPa for Ag coatedCNTs infused nylon as compared to 250.2 MPa for neat nylon.These results show asignificant improvement of~ 66% in the tensile strength as compared to the neatnylon.
