Combing with the practice of caving coal in China, the fragmenting and moving laws of lop coal and the moving laws of overlying strata at stope were studied in the paper. It was referred that the main factors influencing the fragmentation and caving effect of lop coal includes mining depth, coal seam strength, the supporting strength and the coal seam thickness etc. At the same time, the breaking of top coal was the interact result of top coal and overlying strata and the supports had only the auxiliary function to break the coal, and the concept of fragment zoning was put forward.
