Coconut is one of the most important crops in Brazil, particularly in thenortheast area where it is grown on coastal tableland soils. During the periodof 1999–2002, four experiments were conducted to study the feasibility ofthe use of saline waters in the irrigation of coconut in different phases of itsgrowth. In Experiments I and II, the effects of irrigation waters of differentsalinities (electrical conductivity of 2.2, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 dS m–1) werestudied during germination and initial growth of seedlings up to 120 days(Experiment I); later the behaviour of the seedlings produced with salinewaters during the next 120 days, when subjected to irrigation with low-
