The Swiss Way to Promote Efficient Motors and Drives in Industry

SwissEnergy, the national program to promote energy efficiency, intends to launch in the period of 2006- 2010 several actions in the field of electric motor driven systems. The first main action has already been started in 2006 and focuses on compressed air. To prepare additional actions in the area of efficient drives and to focus the next actions again on promising targets, specific preparation work had to be done. Although it is well known that the potential of efficient drives is between 15% and 25% of the electricity consumption of motors, there is still the question how to address this to the people who can realize it and how to really convince them to invest in efficient driven systems. As it is very difficult to address the responsible people in the industry, Switzerland elaborated concrete actions to reach the ambitious goal. Therefore a national market research with many interviews was done to understand the specific (national) barriers and to learn what industry would accept to participate in national actions. Based on that, groups of measures have been defined allocating to them an estimated efficient potential. Additionally, the measures have been combined with the industry segments, allocating specific industry segments to measures considering the efficiency potential. Finally the target audience in the industry, the instruments as well as the needed financing has been elaborated. As a result more than 20 actions were defined. These actions have been presented to national experts, motor industry and agencies in a workshop for discussion and to bring in additional know how. After that, the most viable actions have been fixed. The next step is the elaboration and preparation of the most promising actions, engaging as much as possible competent partners, so the challenging motor campaign with clear actions can start in autumn 2007 under the umbrella of SwissEnergy.
